"Eww!" is often the first reaction to seeing many of the small six - eight legged beady-eyed creatures.
Yes, many insets bite, sting and can be harmful pests, devouring crops and creating a health hazard. However they are a fundamental part of ecosystems. Insects, along with other invertebrates and decomposers are the core of nature's recycling centres, breaking down waste and creating soils that enable plants to grow. They pollinate plants so that beautiful flowers can turn to seed and continue for many generations. Insects are also a base for food chains, being eaten by other much loved animals such as hedgehogs, bats and birds.
Can we learn to love and appreciate creepy crawlies? Our environment depends on it. Even the smallest creatures have their place in the wider ecosystem.
